Research activities concerning flow (maximum 100 words)

Research projects have focused on exploring the varying complexities and contexts within which flow can emerge, and the interaction our character strengths can have during flow. Other current lines of research focus on examining flow within higher education teaching and interaction sessions, with the future goal of incorporating any findings into the sculpting of teaching sessions so as to increase the likelihood of flow emerging for the student.

Application of flow research (applications/consulting in the workplace, health, education, etc) maximum 100 words

I was a part of a project to generate a series of 10 documents, introducing key topics within positive psychology, one of which flow was the focal point, with a particular focus on application within organisations. These documents were to be used as part of a marketing campaign by the client and were accompanied by short, 3 minute videos I created.

About Me

This year I obtained a master's degree of Applied Positive Psychology at Aarhus University, in Copenhagen.

Prior to that I hold a MFA from The Royal Danish College of Art in Copenhagen, and studied painting and stage design at Berlin University of the Arts´s Institute for Performing Arts (Hochschule der Kunste).

As a Visual Artist focusing on interdisciplinary experiments, with artistic concepts, that go beyond the performing arts, and explores the diversity of fields that make up the world of fine art. In particular a fusion between set design, installation art and painting. Also lecturing on interdisciplinary set design for experimental theatre and performance art.

Now uniting artistic practice experience with elements from positive psychology, in which creative and methodological elements are combined in a close interweaving of theory and practice. In particular interdisciplinary team flow development, collaborative creativity enhancement, and flowexperiences in relation to artistic workprocesses.

About Me

I hold a doctorate in psychology from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland.  I am originally from California but have lived in Scotland/England for the past 10 years.  My PhD research was on some of the specific antecedents and consequences of flow during visual creativity, which were explored using mixed methods (experimental and qualitative).  I am currently working as a Research Associate at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), studying creativity and bridging the gap between both the Art & Design and Psychology departments. As of January 2017, I will be working as a Lecturer in Positive Psychology at Buckinghamshire New University, near London.

I am currently writing on my Ph.D. theses "Inside the outdoor experience. On the distinction between pleasant and interesting feelings and their implication in the motivational process.

In general, I am interesting the concept of "positive experiences" in the outdoor context: The distinction between hedonic and eudaimonic feelings, temporality and feelings, the role of positive emotions in the motivational process and the general concept of flow.

I am also working as a lecturer and instructor in the outdoor education program.

I am a Lean practitioner and coach with an interest in Lean as the science of work, based on flow in any context where there is work. This theoretical framework of flow is at three levels: process, individual and team levels. In this context, flow is defined as the process of energy moving through a system. Finally, in Lean, an applied collaborative science, there is a deterministic goal: use the least energy to flow the maximum amount of value to the client.

Research activities concerning flow (maximum 100 words)

Our research concern Optimal Learning Environments, notably the individual and social conditions for flow and psychological well-being in educational context.

Notably the Flow in education scale (EduFlow scale) : An Instrument in the Service of Studying Optimal Learning Environments.

The EduFlow Scale has several advantages: it can be used in different educational contexts; it is a 12-item scale reducing respondent burden; and, it differentiates four dimensions of flow that are relevant to cognitive processes (there are three items per dimension) :

  • FlowD1: Cognitive control—Great inner clarity - knowing what needs to be done and how well it is going, sense of control over their actions.
  • FlowD2: Immersion and Time transformation—immersion in the task and alteration in the perception of time, sometimes leading to a lengthened duration of immersion in the task.
  • FlowD3: Loss of self-consciousness—lack of self-concern related to an increase in importance of the psycho-social dimension of learning.
  • FlowD4: Autotelic experience—well-being during task perform-ance resulting from purpose in the task itself that enhances persis-tence and the desire to engage in the activity again.
Note:
FlowD1+FlowD2+FlowD3 = Cognitive absorption: « a state of deep involvement in an activity focused on understanding with –or without– software » (Heutte, 2014).

Application of flow research (applications/consulting in the workplace, health, education, etc) maximum 100 words

The EduFlow Scale has been tested in various educational contexts with students ranging from primary school to university including face-to-face learning (Heutte, 2011; Fenouillet, Heutte, Martin-Krumm, & Boniwell, 2014) and online learning (Caron, Heutte, & Rosselle, 2013; Heutte, Galaup, Lelardeux, Lagarrigue, & Fenouillet, 2014; Heutte, Kaplan, Fenouillet, Caron, & Rosselle, 2014).
